i'm highly fond of the hp brand, though my bosses prefer to brother brand. toner cartridges for either one can cost an arm, a leg, and half your soul, though.
For small home office use you can't go past the Brother HL2140 - http://www.brother.co.nz/public/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=HL2040
I love these little babies and wish I'd never strayed off the track and bought a Canon as well ...
Could you use a much-loved but functional LaserWriter Select with an almost new cartridge? You can take it away if you like.

I nipped out today and got Nix's recommendation of a HL2040 - it is ace of base, and was cheap as chips.
