Vegemite vs Marmite

Poll time.

I have a theory that nobody actually chooses whether they're a Vegemite or Marmite person, they're just brought up like one or t'other.

Whaddaya reckon?

Anyhoo, here is my most scientific poll (Wanda Harland, asking the questions people want answered):

Which do you prefer?
Vegemite
Marmite
I'm not from New Zealand, and I think you're freaks for liking that weirdo black gunk
I'm not from NZ, and I'd like to try that weirdo black gunk
I'm not from NZ, and I've acquired a taste for Vegemite
I'm not from NZ, and I've acquired a taste for Marmite

How about "I am from NZ and I think you're freaks for liking that black gunk" as an option?

Impossible. Nobody born here feels that way.

What about a "Can't tell the difference" option?

Nobody admits to that.

I am glad that important issues are being aired here. I am alarmed by the preponderance of trivia in the mass media, and it is heartwarming to see someone fighting for sanity.

Brilliant - another poll I can hijack thru' multiple voting. Whoops, sorry. But I bet Marmite wins. Cause it's a boy name. I mean who would admit to vegemite. Anyway this sure beats the telecom debate over on the Drury channel, or the inane IT shite lathered all over my RSS feed. Matha - you're living in the love of the common people ... see you tmrw.

Ah, weirdly I was bought up on Marmite - high country girl from the deep South.
But! When introduced to the delights of vegemite - [something to do with shifting to my natural home at sea level] I couldn't stand previous brown gunk anymore.
Now committed to life on the ocean wave - and a true vegemite convert.
Nature/Nuture? - or just tastes better - i reckon.
Ps totally allergic to everything as a high country kid.. - That disappeared when i came down the mountain..
Some people are born in the wrong place i guess.

erm to clarify - i think i've shot that theory out of the water.
Yes I'm a Kiwi - and yes I switched gunk preference to vegemite .. now, if only finding a flag to swear by was only a matter of taste [buds].

Good! It was a very flakey theory to begin with loosely based on a) being a blogger who sometimes puts idle thoughts into words and b) politics (don't ask).

I'm a marmite gal, but my parents only eat vegemite.

Martha - in your incarnation as a female blogger. Have you been keeping tabs on Public Address System - especially the Tze mok's Yellow Peril thread? I very shyly posted and then ran away.. umm but went back for Deborah's post. Crikey.
Can you do a poll on how many glasses of wine it takes to post a great dissertation on present day feminism? Unfortunately my own love of certain grape varieties precludes me from taking part..

But I was born here, and I hate that shit. Give me butter by itself, or nutella or peanut butter any day...

My goodness, I was having this very conversation on Saturday morning. Have you bugged my kitchen?

Grew up in central Europe with Scottish parents who all but force-fed me Marmite and Bovril. I myself prefer Nutella. The first I ever heard about Vegemite was in that Aussie pop song whose name I have momentarily forgotten. Men at Work?

So what is the difference anyway?

I'm with Joanna. I had to pretend to not be from NZ to vote.

There isn't an option for me, if there were it would need to be "I wasn't born in NZ, I dislike all of them, but sometimes cook with British Marmite, which is totally different, and marketed here under the name Our Mate, and which tastes marvellous when smeared lightly on pastry in a pie, especially if the pie has bacon in it"

howzat

Brought up Vegemite, and, having just escaped from a Marmite household, one of the greatest joys in moving into my own place was stocking up on Vegemite.

Marmite is an abomination--it's sweet for goodness sake! That's just not holy.

I'm with Joanna - born and bred NZer, but hate the black gunk, and would prefer super crunchy peanut butter (utter peanut butter nutter) anyday!
