I can't stand hotmail, and my account has been full for about 5 years.

I've set up gmail as my backup now, so thanks Jo. It will be good to be able to access my address book when I'm away... Well, if I win lotto I may be away a bit more. Mmmm. Lotto dreaming.

If your not using hotmail, what are you using Martha?
Yeah the only thing good about Gmail for me is the amount of space it allows you to have.

I don't understand. Why do people love this gmail thing? What does it have that I don't?!

The storage function is really good. Instead of saving individual emails, if you have a series of emails with someone under the same subject line, it saves them all together. It's great! But hard to explain. Plus there's a good search function and it doesn't have enormous flashing advertisements - instead it has those text-related ones - 'adsense' I think? Anyway much less obnoxious. I was sceptical at first but now I've pretty much entirely switched over. Phew, rant.

I like the idea of it for a few reasons. One thing is I trust storing my mail online more than my old computer.

I use Outlook at the moment, and I like it. However in the last 4 years I've changed internet provider 3 times, and consequently my email address has changed. I'm pretty sure people haven't kept up with my changes so possibly I'm not getting all my prizewinning mail.

With Paradise I had 5 free email addresses, whereas with Woosh I only have one. What this means is that if I want to give out my email address is comes with my husband's name too - hopeless for online dating (jokes).

Annnnd, hotmail is full of junk mail and delivers good email to the junk folder so I'm always having to trawl through it. Though to be fair to hotmail I've only used it as an email address I use when I don't want to be got in touch with.

And finally - portability. I like that I can access my contacts and emails wherever I go.

Whew.

I use gmail for signing up for things that I don't really want going to my excellently spam free email account. Actually just for things that I want to get but don't really trust the sites with my real email. Anyways I have buckets of invites so anybody wanting one just email smoothfruity at you know where...

as jessie says above, gmail is worth it just for the threaded email conversations.

you can access it anywhere.

the storage is great.

the search facility is a thousand times faster than outlooks.

Ben: "Surely a proper email account is far better?"
What exactly is a 'proper email account'?
