Petone Rocks

Since we moved to Petone in 2002, I have been hankering after the city. I think it is time to just get over it.

What I am probably hankering after is long nights in town, with a 2 minute walk up to our apartment at the end of the night, two incomes, Saturday morning paper in bed - and do you know, not much else. Life is funny and fun and lovely out here in Petone. We are one block from the sea, 4 blocks from every shop you could possibly need, and we have lots of great playgrounds for the children. We have several fabulous, fun friends within walking distance to have barbeques and food and drink with.

Unfortunately the pub scene out here has been a bit shabby. I'm pleased to report there is a Speights Bar opening. This may not sound deeply hip and cool, but actually I don't think I fit that demographic any longer. The bar is going to be like the one on Tinakori Rd, so I'm pretty confident it will be done well - and means there will finally be somewhere civilised to watch rugby.

The other good news is that a very nice looking Tulsi has just opened on Jackson St too. I think this suburb is set to get quite good quite soon.

That's the way to be - get to a place that is OK and wait for it to get better.

Much like Miramar - when the new cionema opens up this place will get better and better.

Speights Ale House* and a Tulsi - sounds good to me!

The Old Shepards Arms ... aaahhh. Far more civilised then the Old Southern Cross.

Is the Bombay Cafe still there? That was an amazing restaurant...

I hear Curry Heaven is great, and I've had takeaways from Bombay, but not dined in. Really we're spoiled for choice with restaurants out here.

And Mike, our Lighthouse Theatre really brought this suburb to life, so I know what you're saying.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm always wistfully looking at house prices in the city and wondering if it would be possible/fair to bring up a child in an apartment but I've been thinking recently its probably time to get over it and just enjoy what I've got here in suburban Peter Dunne-land.

Probably best to piss off the kids and move into a cool apartment as soon as they leave home. Seems a popular strategy!
