Polygamy

Since watching Big Love I've been a bit fascinated by polygamy. I'm having trouble seeing what the problem is.

I appreciate that a large proportion of polygamists are dirty pedophiles and won't let women go to work and have basic freedoms. These are surely quite different crimes from marrying two people though.

I could definitely handle another wife about the house. She would be welcome to stay at home with the kids if she liked, or go to work and bring home some bacon. I really don't mind either way. She'd double the wardrobe too.

I'm being obvious I know ... but marriage isn't all cooking and shopping ... what about "it"? Or is "it" something you'd handle.

Oh - and who gets to choose the 2nd wifey - you or hubby?

Oh 2 - what about 2 husbands? Think of all that extra ... shaving cream

In Big Love they had a vote. Everyone has to agree on the new wife.

And in fact each wife has their own house.

It is a very nicey nice view of polygamy. If any of those wives were available though, I don't think anyone would have a problem with it. Or "it", which I imagine means cleaning the windows?

My God, The Horror,

The phone bills, extra bathrooms, PMS squared, wine deliveries...
Constant rearranging of furniture, colour scheme "debates" , car wear & tear, ...

The monastry after a week for me ...

Yeah, women say that, but when you announce that you're bringing number 2 home suddenly they go off the idea.

Paraphrasing what I can remember of Sir Richard Burton on the subject:

The Prophet decreed that no Muslim should have more than four wives.

One wife would be lonely.

Two would squabble.

If three, then two would always combine to gang up on the other one.

And four is surely enough for anyone.

I'm beginning to see the appeal of Islam.

I watch Big Love and am fascinated by it all, too. Here's what I don't get. Polygamy is against the law in all 50 states over here. So, people illegally practicing polygamy can only legally be married to one person, and the other marriages aren't recognized by the state. I have no idea if polygamists can be prosecuted or not - but I'm not sure that I think it's all that different from a man who is married and yet has one (or several) mistress(es). Doesn't taht seem strange?
