Pretty in Pink

I bought Pretty in Pink at the Red Shed the other day. In my head I thought I was getting 16 Candles. My flatmates and I loved the dude who was the love interest (Jake Schnauzer or something, he was in Mermaids too).

Pretty in Pink did feature my teen fave, Andrew McCarthy (obviously a fave well behind River Phoenix). My god. The people you like when you're 14. The horror. Squeaky voice, chicken neck.
This time around I though Harry Dean Stanton was the hottest. Not HOT, but the hottest. You wait til you see him in Big Love, his head is imploding.

I'm so old.

My goodness...I just got Breakfast Club to watch tonite. I am old too. But I never liked Andrew McCarthy of that generation. I liked Judd Judd Nelson.

Judd Nelson was so edgy, I admire your choice. Andrew McCarthy was as tame as a tame thing, god knows what the fascination was.

Enjoy the flick.

Both Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink got me at the right time - mid 20s - not far removed from that part of my own life but oh so much more mature :)
I liked Andrew McCarthy too, in an if-I-were-younger way. Molly Ringwald got up my nose, I preferred her in Breakfast Club because at least she was supposed to irritate me. Part of the problem is she reminds me of my sister, but I thought she was shallow, and I don't think my sister is or was shallow, so that contradiction was all Molly's fault.

Now I want to see both films again...

I keep trying not to say this, because I don't want to become some kind of internet weirdo, but wouldn't some kind of '80s movie session be great? Maybe we should talk to the Paramount about a screening. I'd love to see these films on the big screen, with wine and no pesky pashing action.

And you're bang on about Molly. She was a very (ahem) unusual looking character - although very empowering for anyone who felt a bit funny looking themselves.

Breakfast club was fab. But Judd was too old for the part. Funny it didn't strike at the time (I was maybe 16? 17?) when I thought he was so dishy. The 80s festival sounds like a great idea.

Stay warm!

The real question is what the hell happened to John Hughes! He directed the greatest teen movies of all time (16 Candles, Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink), then as soon as the 90s hits he goes and directs ALL of the Home Alone (INCLUDING Home Alone 4), Beethoven (including the straight-to-video Beethoven movies), and Baby's Day Out! I mean WTF?!?!

I bet you he had kids. I wish he would un-have them.

AND he wrote Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Yeah, what happened.

The music in those films is pretty damned good. It's worth getting them just for that.
